IRC M1502.4.1 — Material and Size

The permanent dryer exhaust duct is required to have a smooth interior finish and be constructed of metal at least 0.0157 inch thick (No. 28 gauge). The duct must be 4 inches in nominal diameter.

Flexible foil, plastic, vinyl, and other materials that do not meet these requirements should not be used as the permanent dryer exhaust duct inside walls, ceilings, floors, attics, or other concealed areas.

Improper materials can become crushed or damaged, create additional resistance to airflow, and provide surfaces where lint can accumulate. When we inspect a dryer vent system, identifying the type and condition of the ductwork is one of the first things we evaluate.

IRC M1502.4.3 — Transition Duct

The flexible transition duct connecting the dryer to the permanent dryer exhaust system must be a single length that is listed and labeled in accordance with UL 2158A.

The transition duct cannot exceed 8 feet in length and cannot be concealed inside walls, ceilings, floors, or other construction.

A transition duct that is not UL 2158A listed, is longer than 8 feet, passes through a wall or other concealed space, or has become crushed or severely kinked should be corrected.

Because the transition duct is directly behind the dryer, even an approved UL 2158A duct can create an airflow restriction if the dryer is pushed too far against the wall and crushes the duct.

IRC M1502.4.6 — Dryer Exhaust Duct Length

Under the code-specified method, the maximum dryer exhaust duct length is 35 feet from the connection at the transition duct to the exterior termination. The transition duct itself is not included in that 35-foot measurement.

The allowable length must also account for elbows and fittings. For example, under the code table, a 4-inch radius mitered 90-degree elbow is equivalent to 5 feet of duct length, while a 4-inch radius mitered 45-degree elbow is equivalent to 2 feet 6 inches.

The code also provides other methods for determining allowable length, including the dryer manufacturer’s installation instructions and qualifying dryer exhaust duct power ventilator systems. This means 35 feet should not simply be treated as an absolute limit for every possible installation.

Long or poorly designed vent systems should be evaluated carefully because excessive equivalent length and unnecessary bends can significantly affect dryer airflow and performance.

 

IRC M1502.3 — Duct Termination

Screens are not permitted at dryer exhaust duct terminations.

The exterior termination must discharge outside the building and be equipped with a backdraft damper. When the dryer manufacturer’s instructions do not specify a termination location, the exhaust termination must be at least 3 feet in any direction from openings into the building, including openings in ventilated soffits.

Screens are a common problem because lint can collect against them and progressively restrict exhaust airflow. A proper dryer vent termination should allow lint and exhaust air to leave the system while the backdraft damper opens and closes freely.

A conventional clothes dryer exhaust system must convey moisture to the outdoors, and the dryer exhaust duct must terminate outside the building.

The dryer vent should not terminate into an attic, crawlspace, garage, wall cavity, ceiling cavity, or other interior area of the home.

Improper indoor termination allows heat, moisture, lint, and dryer exhaust to discharge into the building rather than being safely carried outdoors. Listed and labeled condensing or ductless dryers are treated differently because they are specifically designed to operate without a conventional exhaust duct.

Dryer exhaust duct sections must be properly supported and secured. The insert end of each duct must extend into the adjoining duct or fitting in the direction of airflow, and duct joints must be properly sealed and mechanically fastened.

Screws or similar fasteners cannot protrude more than 1/8 inch into the inside of the dryer exhaust duct.

Long screws extending into the airflow path can catch lint as it travels through the system and contribute to lint accumulation. Improperly connected or poorly secured duct sections can also separate and allow dryer exhaust, moisture, and lint to escape before reaching the exterior.

The dryer exhaust must terminate outside the building and include a backdraft damper. Screens cannot be installed over the termination.

The termination passageway must remain undiminished in size and provide an open area of at least 12.5 square inches.

Damaged vent hoods, stuck dampers, restrictive covers, lint buildup, animal nesting, or other obstructions can interfere with proper exhaust airflow even when the ductwork inside the home is otherwise properly installed.

The exterior termination is part of the complete dryer vent system and should be inspected for proper design, condition, location, and airflow.
